Solar Swimming Pool Heating
The concept of the solar heating system gathering free heat from the sun is attractive and will work. In some climates it can be a very effective heating method particularly for those warmer countries like Spain, Cyprus etc but for the UK it can be unreliable at maintaining a constant temperature in the pool. Despite this, depending on the quality of the system used, like many pool owners you can solely rely upon this method to heat the pool water, as it is a very economical method of heating. However for optimal performance you may wish to use solar pool heating in conjunction with other methods of heating the pool water due to the unpredictable seasonal weather. If solar heating is used as a secondary source it will still save you money on your heating costs.
There are various designs of panels which ultimately work in a different way. In the main the premium solar panel systems are controlled by a different controller which is set to measure the temperature of the water and the temperature of the air. When the air is sufficiently warmer than the water of the pool the systems starts, otherwise the heat from the pool would radiate the air and consequently the cooler air could reduce the temperature of the pool. Some of the cheaper systems which are used mainly on above ground pools do not have this option so it is important to test this yourself manually before switching on the system.
Standard pool solar collectors require a bank of panels equivalent to 50%-75% of the surface area of the pool depending on the geographical location and the brand of panels. Ideally this bank should be angled at 15 to 45 degrees to the horizontal and be facing south.

Using the pool pump, water is automatically pumped through the solar collectors which consequently heats the water as it moves through. This heated water is returned back to the pool through the return fitting. This cycle continues until your desired temperature has been reached and/or the air temperature is less than the water temperature. At this point the system should automatically or be manually switched off.
