Most suitable for Indoor Pools, Hydrotherapy Pools and Spas/Hot Tubs

Swimming Pool Heat Retention Covers have become extremely popular over the past few years especially in domestic and commercial indoor pools in an effort to cut our carbon footprint and save on heating energy costs and water through evaporation. They are also very common in spas and hydrotherapy pools

Swimming Pool Heat Retention Covers otherwise know as Heat Blankets or Foam Covers are much more suitable for indoor pools as opposed to outdoor pools as unlike Solar Bubble Covers, their main function is to retain heat and not to harness the energy from the sun to heat the pool.

Step 1 Please Choose Your Pool Shape

We are able to design and manufacture any cover to suit any pool shape. We have illustrated below the most common designs of pools. Please select which shape corresponds to your design of pool and then proceed to step 2.

If your pool is an irregular shape then please use the 'freeform' design. You generally only need the length and width as its longest and widest points to obtain a price. Some designs require plans which you can download from above. Alternatively you can opt for a 'Rectangle' cover that you can cut for yourself on poolside. Please do not select hemming from the optional extras if you plan to the cut the cover yourself.

Step 2 Please Enter Pool Size (Wall to Wall Measurements)

You will need to input the measurements which relate to the pool shape you have chosen above. In most cases this will be the pool water dimensions (wall to wall), however on freeform pools this may be the measurements at its longest and widest points. Please make sure you fill out all the dimensions required i.e. a Roman End pool requires 4 measurements - A,B,C and D. Circular only requires measurement A

Plans/Sketches are usually only required on Freeform, Octagonal and Side Walk-in Stair/Bay Pools. For help on measuring your pool accurately please see the useful downloads section above.

Step 3 Choose Cover Material

Our range of pool cover materials will suit various swimming pools, environments and budgets. We have identified an easy to use rating system which should help you decide which cover is the most suitable one for you.

  • 6mm Heat Retention Pool CoverThe leading swimming pool distributor in the UK – Certikin, manufactures the Thermalux 6mm Heat Blanket. It is made from a closed cell PE foam. This cover is suitable for all heat retention purposes and benefits from a clear laminated underside and a strong woven polyethylene top coat making it extremely hard wearing. The density of the material helps to keep light penetration to a minimum and therefore reduces algae growth. It can withstand pool water temperatures up to 30 degrees C. The covers are made approximately 30mm narrower than the pool width. As standard the Thermalux material comes with cut edges however we do offer an upgrade so you can have the edges hemmed.

  • 12mm Heat Retention Pool CoverThe 12mm Spa Heat Retention Cover has been specifically designed for use on spas (hot tubs) and hydrotherapy pools due to their high temperatures, increased chemical levels and significant water evaporation. This lightweight 12mm foam blanket has a laminated top and bottom with an embossed clear protective layer. It is double the thickness of most swimming pool covers in order to reduce the water evaporation in the spa by up to 90%. Water evaporation accounts for 70% of heat loss in spas. This premium material can withstand water temperatures up to 39 degrees C. This cover is not suitable for use with swimming pool reel / roller systems and is also not hemmed. Covers can easily be removed from the spa / hydrotherapy pool by hand.

Much like the bubble covers though, these heat blankets are sheets of lightweight compressed foam that float on the surface of the pool or spa. They are made from closed cell polyethylene foam and have a tough woven top and bottom sheet for maximum heat retention and strength and are heat welded and shaped to your specification.

It is now widely accepted that installing a Heat Retention Cover is the single most effective means of reducing swimming pool energy consumption. Each swimming pool with no cover loses 5 degrees C in 5 hours. By fitting the correct heat retention cover you could reduce this heat loss to just 0.54 degrees C in 5 hours with a reduction in energy bills of up to £12,000 per annum (figures based on a 25m x 12m pool at 2008 prices). Depending on what Swimming Pool Reel system you opt for, a payback period as short as 12 months can be expected.

Its not just the reduced energy bills that make for such a strong argument for covering your pool with a heat blanket. The vast majority of heat loss from swimming pool water is through evaporation. With a pool cover in place, evaporation is virtually eliminated. This will benefit you from reduced humidity and condensation in the pool building and consequently will reduce the work involved for your Dehumidifier.

Additional options are available for the heat blankets including hemmed edges and specifically designed leading edge & towing kits. These are foam filled, reinforced and come complete with a towing rope to ease with the operation of the pool covers. They are particularly useful if the cover is to be handled by one person. We do recommend these on all covers, as they also help to extend the life of the cover too.

As the heat retention pool covers are of the manual variety, you will almost certainly require a swimming pool reel. Without one of these, it is fairly difficult to remove the covers from the pool unless they are on a spa or a very small hydrotherapy pool and with regular manual handling, the material will most certainly get damaged very easily. We offer a variety of swimming pool rollers that can be operated by a steering wheel, or for a greater investment, by the push of a button on a remote control.
