For the pool owner you have probably experienced a frustrating time in recent weeks dealing with the changeable weather. Wow, what a difference from last April!

A burst of sunshine in March led to many of you opening pools earlier this year to get ready for the first bank holiday weekends. This was followed by a period of dull, rainy weather (we have noticed many orders for deep leaf nets!) and we are all now waiting for spring to really arrive and hopefully a long hot summer to look forward to.
A customer recently shared some images with us of how a recent order of chemicals and successful application of them has turned their “pea soup” pool water into a swim ready clear blue pool. This was achieved through patience and persistence (10 day turn around) using Granular Shock with Clarifier, Water Balance testing and treatment (this is so very important!) and an Algicide dose.
If you have taken your eye off the pool in this cooler weather you do no worse than to follow suit to get yourself set for a scorching May (we hope!).

The long awaited launch of the latest in solar bubble cover technology has finally arrived with the Geo Bubble material now available.

Geo Bubble has been formulated in a way to reduce the effect of chemicals & UV rays. It is 50% larger and overall will last much much longer than the traditional bubble still available as the Blue, SilverBlue & Gold covers.

Available as a 500 Micron Sol+Guard cover and also a 600 Micron Aqua Max, with the extra thickness offering even more durability and increased heat retention, these pool covers are what you should have floating on your pool. For a bespoke price click here.
The solar gain and heat retaining aspects of these covers WILL save you money in the long term. Gas, Oil or Electric heating costs will be reduced with the best quality solar covers around. Although the idea of the bubble cover is not new, the improved material & increased longevity now make a solar bubble cover an even better investment.

With the upcoming issues regarding hose pipes bans, or officially “Temporary Water Use Ban”, it is a good time to consider what you can do now and in the future to save water and be more Eco-friendly.

As a consequence of saving water you can often also reduce the amount of maintenance required for your pool equipment.

Installing a Pre Filtration device can help extend the life of your filter media, whether than it sand, a cartridge filter or something else. The Waterco MultiCyclone requires only a small amount of water (15 litres) to clean.

For sand filters it will reduce the need for a weekly backwash and for a cartridge filter you will not need to haul filter out and clean it so often. The reduction in backwash frequency of a sand filter could result in the savings of up to 5,000 litres of water per year
for an average domestic swimming pool.

You can view our Waterco and Sta-Rite filter products by clicking on the links above.

These low voltage, environmentally-friendly lighting options will also cost you much less to run than the standard 300w sealed beam underwater light.

LED lighting can last up to 100,000 hours so over 10 years, They also use about 80% less power than the 300w light so significantly reduce your running costs & maintenance requirements. Overheat protection is also built in on many LED light bulbs.

With both white and colour change (red, green, blue) options available you also have a choice on the type of light that will suit your pool and surrounding area. You can also an add an accessory such as a Deck Box Lid Light for added effect.

If you have an existing 300w sealed beam light then you only need to purchase the light and cable, sometimes referred to as ‘Guts’. You can also upgrade to LED lighting if you have an older Halogen installation. For a new build, as you need only light transformer (PU11S) to power up to 5 lights then LED could even be cheaper than 300w if you are installing several lights to the pool.

There has been growing media interest in recent weeks over the possibility of a Hose Pipe ban or even a Drought order from the government. We have the latest advice from the Swimming Pool and Spa industry bodies since the latest update from DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).

In a Temporary Water Use Ban (“hosepipe ban”), domestic swimming pools and paddling pools will be included as activities that can be prohibited from topping up by hosepipes, or fixed plumbing (but please note that hand held containers, such as buckets are permitted). Non-domestic swimming pools, such as hotels and holiday pools are being included in restrictions only when there is a Drought Order.

Hot Tubs could continue to be filled by a hosepipe. If a Drought Order did occur then Hot Tubs would most likely be included in the restrictions. Generally pools under construction or for medical or veterinary treatment would be excluded in restrictions.

Drought Orders are very rare in virtually all Water Authorities in the UK, so let’s hope for a long hot summer with the odd spells of rain to keep the water levels up!

Swimming pool heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular with pool owners looking to reduce heating costs and be more eco friendly. With this shift from conventional methods of heating (i.e. Electric, Gas & Oil Heaters) has come a variety of different heat pumps and manufacturers into the market.

Heat Pumps are given an output capacity generally rated in kw. In the UK there is no industry standard on what temperature the kw is measured at. Therefore some heat pumps are measured at temperatures in the mid-late 20degC’s, therefore giving a high kw rating compared to others where output is measured at 15degC. This does not necessarily mean a higher kw leads to a more efficient or better performing pump.

Be sure to ask this question when you are looking in a heat pump purchase to check what your money is actually getting you.

Our Zodiac range of heat pumps (Power, Power First & Air Energy) are measured at 15degC and give both us and you the customer the assurance that the heat pump we size for you will be effective.
